With the growing demand for talent in the country, each year thousands of applicants from around the world compete for a limited quota of visas.
Now, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced the new date to file an application and obtain them through the upcoming 2024 visa lottery. The federal agency told the press that the chance to do so will open on March 1 of this year at noon, closing also at noon on the 17th of the same month.
If you are thinking of applying for an H-1B visa, at Jaskot Law, we will guide you through the process, and provide you with valuable information on what you need to know to increase your chances of success by learning how to apply for a work visa for the USA in 2024.
What is the H-1B visa?
The H-1B visa is a work visa that consists of a foreigner who has a certain degree of training and/or specialized knowledge in a certain area, providing he’s useful to a U.S. company that wants to legally hire him/her.
With these pre-conditions, the H-1B visa would allow the skilled foreign national to be hired in the country, granting him or her a non-immigrant status. In other words, he will not have permanent residency, although he could apply for it at a later date.
Once the status is obtained, it will have a duration of 3 years. However, as mentioned above, it is possible to extend this benefit by obtaining permanent residency.
How to apply for an H-1B visa in 2024?
In principle, USCIS asks those interested in applying to do so through an online myUSCIS account, where all beneficiaries in the selection process would be registered. It is important to note that there is a $10 fee for each registration that must be paid.
Both employers and U.S. agents commonly known as “registrants” will have to use the “registrant” account, which has been available since February 21. The USCIS will assign each registrant a registration confirmation number for the purpose of monitoring each registration.
When will the visa be delivered?
Although registration to apply will begin on March 1, who will be granted visas will not be known until October 1. Since the Trump Era, this selection is done electronically and randomly. Besides, in general, there is much more demand than supply for visas. That’s how this visa lottery works for fiscal year 2024.
On the other hand, it is possible that not only people from outside the country, but also students residing in the United States may apply to it under the so-called F-1 visa.
It is important that those who have any kind of doubt, or need to apply urgently for this visa, go to an immigration lawyer specialized in this matter. This will avoid problems with the application, and increase your chances of accessing the benefit.
